Historic coaching inn with on-site microbrewery in Chester city centre

Microbrewery & Dining

The Pied Bull operates its own microbrewery in the cellar, producing handcrafted ales available exclusively at the hotel. Guests can join brewery tours led by head brewer Richard to learn about the brewing process and sample the beers. The on-site restaurant serves freshly prepared food using locally sourced ingredients, with a menu that includes fresh fish, steaks, and a children's selection.

Rooms & Suites

The hotel offers Four Poster Suites with roll-top baths and Premier Suites with added comforts. All rooms include en suite facilities, a working area, TV, and tea and coffee making equipment. The building dates from 1155 and features original Jacobean panelling and a staircase from 1535.

Location & History

The Pied Bull sits within the walls of the Roman city of Chester, on Northgate Street near the Town Hall and Chester Market. Guests can walk to Chester Racecourse, Storyhouse Theatre, and Chester Zoo within minutes. Established in 1155 as Chester's oldest coaching inn, the building retains original features such as its historic staircase and panelling.

Family & Pet-Friendly

The hotel welcomes families and provides children's options on the dining menu, as well as family rooms. Pets are allowed, making it convenient for guests travelling with dogs. The hotel's location within the city walls puts families close to shops, restaurants, and attractions like Chester Zoo.

Awards & Unique Experiences

The Pied Bull received the CH1 Chester Bid Customer Service Award for Best Hotel/B&B in 2019. Guests can enjoy the charming beer terrace for outdoor drinks, and the on-site microbrewery provides a one-of-a-kind beer experience not found elsewhere in Chester. The hotel offers luggage storage and efficient check-in services for convenience.

clean room rainfall showerhead comfortable bed
The room was very clean (it looked like it had been recently updated). the shower was spacious. I liked the rainfall showerhead. the bed was indeed very comfortable.
the lighting in the room was quite dim, especially near the wardrobe, making it difficult to see clothing clearly.

good size walk-in shower
The bedroom was a good size, and the bathroom had a great walk in shower. breakfast was excellent and so was dinner in the bar. I even got a discount for being a resident.
the building is old so it's very creaky, and the walls are thin, so you can hear your neighbors.

my room was very clean, and staff were friendly. I found a nice bar with a good selection of drinks, including beers from the in house micro brewery. a separate lounge was very comfortable. a dining area and sun trap patio completed things well.

Average Stay with Some Disappointments

street noise thin glazing
The noise was definitely an issue. I could hear guests in the next room, and the street was busy late into the night. Early morning street cleaning and refuse collection added to the problem. It might be worth investing in better glazing to reduce the noise levels because earplugs were not enough. A REALLY good night's sleep was impossible.
